Speculative Futurisms: Visual Imaginings of Change and the Unknown

Friday, March 27th 2026 - 9:50am to 5:30pm

Jarislowsky Institute (EV — 3.711)

Speculative Futurisms: Visual Imaginings of Change and the Unknown aims to delve into the ways that art can be used as a tool to imagine the future in a multitude of ways. Visual culture has historically and continues to be used to radically re-imagine the uncertainty of what lies ahead, to advocate for change, and enact resistance. In a time of uncertainty, where feelings of precarity loom, it is vital to come together to interrogate and re-imagine narratives, and art can be a poignant way of doing this.

This year’s conference programming brings together undergraduate researchers and practitioners to examine how futurity is imagined through sensory experience, political resistance, and spatial or environmental conditions. Together, they explore the shared question of how art participates in imagining, contesting, or constructing possible futures.

We look forward to seeing you at this year’s awaited event!
